The post-rock musician David Grubbs's collaboration with the avant-garde reed player Mats Gustafsson has a curiously old-fashioned, surrealist feel---not so much in Gustafsson's free-music blowout, "Rendezvous Up North," as in the cut-up sequences of "Back Off," which feature a cat yowling, a loop of ethnic music, and what sounds like a circular saw, among other samples. The playfulness continues in the rhythmic scratches of "Three If By Train" and the curious noise that sounds like a giant bee which occurs throughout "Skiing and Shooting."
